Family Health Insurance

Looking after you always

Our families are the most important things in our lives. Here are some tips to give you peace of mind that your family is properly covered when you buy health insurance.

All paediatric treatment in Ireland is carried out at public hospitals

You might think that to get the best paediatric care for your child, you need cover for private hospitals. That’s not the case. All of Ireland’s child specialists are attached to public hospitals.

You can still decide to take out cover for private treatment at a public hospital, which will help with waiting times. Depending on your level of cover, your child would also qualify for a private or semi-private bed, if one is available. That might mean they are more comfortable as they recuperate.

Location is important

While you might want to include general and specialist treatments at private hospitals on your family health insurance policy, it’s a good idea to check that you have one near you. Some parts of Ireland don’t have a conveniently located private hospital. So it may not make sense to pay for cover for treatment at one.

Kids and sniffles

Anyone who has children knows that they will catch any bug that is going round. That can mean plenty of trips to the doctor. So, if you have a young family, it could be worthwhile increasing your cover for day-to-day medical expenses: GP visits, visits to specialists, prescriptions, those kinds of things.

On the other hand, if your family is older and more robust, you may not need as much cover for day-to-day expenses. That’ll reduce your premium.
