Aside from making New Year’s resolutions, keeping them is equally as important. Follow our tips below to help you achieve your 2017 New Year’s resolutions.
1) Get real
For your New Year’s resolution to make it past January it’s important that your goal is realistic. Consider what is really involved in the changes you want to make and understand what you need to do to make it happen.
2) You CAN have it all…just not all at once!
Don’t try to achieve too much too quickly! Focus on what you really want to achieve; write a list and choose the one that is most important to you. If you set yourself too many goals together, chances are you may not achieve any of them.
3) Take it easy!
Remember, start small and make changes that you will be able to keep and build on. If you’re trying to lose weight for example, don’t make radical changes that you won’t keep. Make sensible choices that you will be able to stick to in the future, like swapping a fizzy drink for a sparkling water with a slice of lemon or your morning biscuit for a piece of fruit.
4) Believe in yourself!
Don’t underestimate the power of positive thinking. Anytime a negative thought intrudes on your thinking, try to replace it with a positive thought. This is a goal you want to achieve, if you think it is slipping away, ask yourself why.
If the reasons that you aren’t achieving your goal are practical, put in place ways of dealing with them. If the reasons are emotional, it is worthwhile exploring past experiences these emotions may be connected to. This can help you move forward and will assist you in meeting your goals.
5) Reach out!
Let family and friends know what you are planning. Their support can get you to your goal especially if the going gets tough from time to time.
6) Say, I do!
Don’t give up if you have a lapse. Ask yourself if you are committed to this goal and tell yourself you do want to do it. A lapse today doesn’t mean you have to wait until the next new year’s eve to have another go.
A new you!
A new you starts when you start to make the positive changes that will protect your future health. Remind yourself of this by using positive affirmations to help you stay focused on your goal.
The trick is to avoid negative messages that will steer you off course. For example, if you have taken up cycling, you can reaffirm this by simply saying ‘I now cycle regularly and have a healthy, fit body’.
Remember, the best New Year’s resolutions are the ones that set good habits for life so that the new healthier you becomes a way of life!
